Since graduating from London College of Fashion (LCF) in
2009 with a BA Menswear degree, Danish designer Asger Juel Larsen has been producing
consistently high-standard designs. His latest menswear collection, shown on 22
February 2012 during London Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2012 was certainly
no exception.
Named ‘Lucid Disorder’, Larsen’s range of garments for
Autumn/Winter 2012 had Soviet army imagery as its core source of inspiration.
After showing Russian military propaganda films for a few seconds to the tone
of nationalistic anthems, the runway show followed with a succession of looks that
mixed military garb with dark romantic and gothic attire to achieve a great
deal of success.
Larsen’s tailoring was overall sharp and included fitted military
coats, jackets adorned with large numbers of zippers, and harem trousers (as a
nod to the 1990s) that contrasted with attractive voluminous knitwear with
draped effects and asymmetric lines. The fabrics and colours chosen for the
clothes stressed the Russian military and nobility influence further while
simultaneously invoking cold climates: neutral blacks and dark browns
contrasted with vibrant shades of red and luxurious golden paisley prints in
thick wools, leather, and fur.
After graduating from LCF in 2009 as top of his class, Asger
Juel Larsen has enjoyed considerable media attention as well as being listed
amongst the finalists at the prestigious Mittelmoda fashion award. After working
for Burberry Prorsum and John Richmond, he joined forces with business partner
Nick Philip Engel to expand his eponymous label. He started by
presenting a menswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2011 during London Fashion
Week as one of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Ones to Watch, and has been a
regular participant since. Larsen’s designs can be found in stockists in Denmark, Germany,
Italy, Japan, and the USA, and on his own website.
