Patricia Motta Spring/Summer 2014/15 Womenswear

Brazilian fashion designer Patricia Motta marked the twentieth anniversary of her eponymous label by showing her womenswear collection for Spring/Summer 2014/15 during the last edition of São Paulo Fashion Week. Titled ‘Verdade’ (the Portuguese word for ‘Truth’), and inspired by a week-long trip undertaken by Motta to a rural area of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (whose capital, Belo Horizonte, is the birthplace of the brand and the location for two of its stores), the collection emphasised the importance of going back to nature and of learning the value of seemingly simplistic beliefs in order to appreciate what really matters in life.

Following the designer’s regard of fashion as the embodiment of “casual sophistication, charm with comfort, and luxury without pretension” that ultimately combines “nature, personality, and strength (…) to warm body and soul”, the collection featured a bright vision of tropical flora to inspire not only the collection’s watercolour prints but also a palette of hues named after fruits, such as lemon, lychee, pitanga (Brazilian cherry) jabuticaba (a kind of grape tree), and pitaia (dragon fruit). And, and as it has become recurrent in her work over recent collections, Motta showed interest in exploring the possibilities of fabric through texture, design, and ornament; and in creating garments and looks with bulbous shapes in order to enhance the feminine body.

Fabrics such as linen, laser-cut leathers, and cotton laces provided multi-dimensional and multi-sensorial tactile qualities to a collection that was light and tropical in feel while also cherishing a genteel portrait of femininity in the form of silhouettes with cinched waists and voluminous skirts of variable lengths. In addition, dresses in ombré gradients of black and white, and garments where zips were used for detailing conjured an image of urbane sophistication. To close the runway show, a wedding dress (the label’s first ever) made from soft leather with laser-cut floral lace designs confirmed Patricia Motta’s latest womenswear collection as one of the most notable during São Paulo Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014/15.
