Mocha Salt: Tailored shorts with built-in functionality and style

As days get warmer and thoughts turn to relaxing holidays on the beach or by the pool, revisions of one’s wardrobe start becoming a planned necessity. While examining the latest offering of swimming trunks and beachwear for men, I came across Mocha Salt, a new brand based in Australia that is bound to be a success with its simple and functional menswear recipe: transitional shorts that are tailored for the city streets and yet can be used for swimming, hiking or biking.

Mocha Salt offers a no-nonsense approach that relies on one single product, the Huck shorts, in two length options of 5 and 7 inches, and in either solid colours or patterned options. The shorts are designed in-house and printed in small batches to allow for originality and exclusivity, and manufacturing takes place in a local family-run company based in Sydney’s garment district.

As for details, think of all the things that annoy you in swimming trunks, and Mocha Salt has them resolved. Made from water-resistant and durable woven nylon, the shorts are cut like chinos and have a slim fit without being tight, featuring straight legs and an above-the-knee cut for a smart, modern look. Each model includes double-stitched seams, back darts, a fused waistband, flow-through pockets that don’t balloon and come out in the water, zipped back pockets, contrast bar tacks for strength and durability, zippers with a locking mechanism that prevents it from opening by itself, and snap side adjusters to allow for waist size variations.

I decided to examine Mocha Salt further and ordered a pair of the Huck 5 in Undertow Blue. The first thing that impressed me when opening the package that arrived in the post in just a few days was the stylish branded box that contained not only the paper-wrapped shorts but also a cotton towel roll that can be used to carry the shorts, wrap them after a swim for a quick dry off, or just to lay your head on.

After trying the shorts on, what you cannot stop noticing immediately is the softness of the fabric: unlike most swimming trunks that have variable degrees of coarseness to them, Mocha Salt’s shorts are surprisingly soft and comfortable. In addition, the tailoring is very elegant, with a fitted cut that is complemented by the metal snaps. As for the Undertow Blue print that I chose, its white geometrically crossed waves against a vivid blue could not be more to my liking. In essence, for making shorts that address all the casual wear needs for men in one single product made to high quality standards, Mocha Salt is a brand that deserves all the success it can secure for what I hope is a very prosperous future.
